José Antonio Hernández Suárez was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde, and is one of the most prominent painters of the Canarian Generation, which began to emerge in the 1960s-1970s.
He studied at Los Salesianos, San Antonio boarding school, at the Las Palmas School of Arts and Crafts. He was awarded a scholarship by the Insular Government of Gran Canaria to Barcelona, Industrial Design School for 3 years, and the Llotja School. He received classes from Juan Serra and the San Lluc Art School, Barcelona.
His technique is multidisciplinary, characterized by the use of pictorial matter, which impastos his paintings achieving relief effects. His work develops mainly within the field of painting, sculpture, ceramics, and stained glass.
He currently lives in Almería, having previously resided in places such as Barcelona, Milan, Turin, and Gran Canaria.
Since 1970, he has held numerous individual exhibitions and has been invited to participate in outstanding collectives within and outside Spain, especially in South America, from where he obtained significant inspiration for his work.
